Types of Engines (Prime Movers)
Engines are categorized by the fuel they use and their mechanical design to drive an alternator. GMA PowerTech supports installation, commissioning, maintenance, repair, and lifecycle care across these prime mover types.
Internal Combustion Engines (ICE)
Diesel Engines
High-torque, robust engines that rely on compression ignition. They are the industry standard for standby emergency power and microgrids due to their rapid start-up times.
Gas Engines (Natural Gas / Biogas)
Spark-ignited engines optimized for clean-burning gaseous fuels. Widely used in continuous-prime power and cogeneration (CHP) applications.
Dual-Fuel Engines
Engines capable of running on a mix of diesel and natural gas simultaneously, offering operational flexibility and lower emissions.
Turbine Engines
Gas Turbines
Internal combustion engines where burning fuel spins a high-speed turbine. They feature an excellent power-to-weight ratio and are common in large-scale peaking power plants.
Steam Turbines

Hydro Turbines
Driven by the kinetic energy of moving water (e.g., Kaplan, Francis, or Pelton wheels) to rotate a generator shaft in hydroelectric dams.
Wind Turbines
Aerodynamic blades that capture kinetic wind energy to rotate a rotor shaft, usually connected to a gearbox and generator.
Types of Generators (Alternators)
Generators are categorized by how they produce electrical current and interact with the grid. GMA PowerTech provides engineering support across these alternator and power conversion technologies.
Alternating Current (AC) Generators (Alternators)
Synchronous Generators
The backbone of grid-scale power. The rotor's magnetic field rotates at the same speed as the grid's electrical frequency, allowing precise control of both real and reactive power.
Induction (Asynchronous) Generators
These require an external source (like the grid) to excite the rotor and run slightly above synchronous speed. Commonly used in older or smaller wind turbine configurations.
Permanent Magnet Generators (PMG)
Utilize rare-earth permanent magnets on the rotor instead of field windings. They offer high efficiency and reliability, making them ideal for modern wind turbines and compact marine setups.
Direct Current (DC) Generators
Dynamos
Commutator-based machines that produce direct current. While largely obsolete for utility-scale power supply due to maintenance overhead, they are still found in specialized low-voltage or industrial battery-charging systems.
Inverter-Based Resources (Non-Rotary Generators)
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Inverters
Solid-state systems that convert the DC power generated by solar panels into grid-synchronized AC power.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
Industrial computing platforms (like Allen-Bradley ControlLogix or Siemens S7-1500) used to execute customized master control logic, plant-wide automated sequences, and data aggregation for SCADA infrastructure.
Digital Engine Governors (e.g., Woodward 723PLUS)
Dedicated, high-speed electronic speed controls that regulate fuel actuator positions to maintain precise engine RPM and electrical frequency under dynamic loads.
Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs)
Solid-state electronic devices that constantly monitor generator terminal voltage and adjust the rotor field excitation current to stabilize output voltage.
Caterpillar EMCP (Electronic Modular Control Panel)
Currently in its EMCP 4 generation, Caterpillar’s proprietary control platform integrates engine governance, voltage regulation, and advanced thermal management into a single interface, with deep diagnostics for Cat engines via the Cat Data Link.
Perkins / FG Wilson Power Wizard
A highly reliable control platform used predominantly on Perkins-powered gensets. It features an intuitive menu structure for tracking engine metrics and electrical AC parameters, with built-in protections against over-current, under-voltage, and reverse power.
SDMO / Kohler Mics & Telys
Specialized control panels for Kohler-SDMO units — including older Mics Nexys/Telys and modern APM systems. Highly regarded for robust communications and straightforward integration into plant monitoring via Modbus.
Cummins PowerCommand Control (PCC)
A fully integrated, microprocessor-based control system standard on Cummins Power Generation units. Combines digital voltage regulation (DVR), electronic governing, and autonomous paralleling logic (AmpSentry protection) on a single control board without external modules.
Advanced Technical Services
Maintaining high-performance power generation systems requires specialized software, calibration, and diagnostic intervention beyond basic mechanical service. GMA PowerTech provides dealer-level tooling and engineering support for ECM and control platform work.
ECM Calibration (Engine Control Module)
The ECM is the onboard computer directing fuel injection timing, common-rail pressure, and emission control systems.
Flash files & parameter tuning
Using dealer-level software — Cat Electronic Technician, Cummins Insite, Perkins EST — technicians upload specific software maps (flash files) to the ECM.
Operational optimization
Calibration when replacing fuel injectors (trim factors), adjusting for high-altitude derating, updating emissions profiles (DEF/DPF), or converting rated frequency between 50 Hz and 60 Hz.
Generator controls programming
Configuring digital parameters within the control panel — EMCP, PCC, Woodward, or similar — so the alternator safely interacts with the electrical load and grid.
Protective relay configuration
Programming ANSI protective elements: overcurrent (51), reverse power (32), under/over voltage (27/59), and under/over frequency (81U/O).
Paralleling logic & dynamic load sharing
Setting PID loops for speed governors and AVRs so multiple generators synchronize, ramp smoothly, and share real power (kW) and reactive power (kVAR) without tripping.
